There is a world of difference in Spain’s withdrawal of her troops from Iraq, which was based on principle and done in accordance with a campaign pledge, and the Philippines’, which was done under threat from terrorists to behead a hostage. Now that they have acquiesced to this group’s demands, how long will it take for other groups to follow that lead? The Philippines have been fighting a Muslim insurgency in their southern islands for many years; will the government withdraw troops from their own territory now because of new threats?
