Suggestions for Recital Pieces

Kathy said I should start thinking about doing another recital. So I’m trying to get ideas of pieces to do on it. The only one I’m definitely doing so far is “This Nearly Was Mine” from “South Pacific” (hear it or read the lyrics). Got any other ideas? Leave ’em in the comments, please.

  1. Have not heard it at all…know where I can find it?

At dinner last night I was talking about this with John and Kitty, and we came up with the idea of doing a set of cut G&S baritone songs: this one, Capt. Corcoran’s “Reflect, My Child”, Strephon’s “Fold Your Flapping Wings”, Sgt. Meryll’s “A Laughing Boy But Yesterday”…know of any others?

  2. It’s a bonus recording on the NDOC recording of Yeomen, which I have and will share with you when I see you next month if you like. I even have sheet music.

Suggestions for other cut songs… I assume you’re only looking for cut baritone songs, the music to which is still extant. It’s too bad about several of them… Mountararat had a song about the origin of the Peerage that looks very funny.

I guess if you wanted to expand a list, you could put the Mikado song in. Cheating a little, but it’s a fun song anyway. But you must include “When Jealous Torments,” from Yeomen. Easily the best cut G&S song around.

  3. You should look at Adelaide by Beethoven. It’s beautiful–my mother’s favorite of all of the songs my father has ever sung.
