Stacey Frankle brought over her Gateway becuase it was refusing to play DVDs. I deleted and reinstalled the the software, and it seemed to be playing fine. But
when I plugged in some speakers to check the sound, got the most hideous staticky sound imagineable. Checked the speakers by hooking them up to my Mac: sounded
fine. Attached another set of speakers to her machine: sounded crappy. Switched PCI slots between sound card and ethernet card (which required reinstalling
drivers becuase WinME is too stupid to realize that nothing has been added, just swapped): still same awful sound. Her mom came online while working on it;
tried to convince her Stacey needed a Mac. Instead, she’s going to have to upgrade to XP (normally I wouldn’t use the term upgrade in describing a move to XP,
but a poke in the eye with a pointed stick is better than WinME) and possibly replace her sound card.
She takes it back, set it up in her room, and the DVD player freaks out again, but the sound is working. Ugh.
