Last Friday I drove to Beaumont for my 20th high school reunion. Thanks to Michael Mayeux and Valerie Hignnett-Brocato for getting us all together. There was a good turnout, and it was great to see so many folks, some of whom I hadn’t seen since graduation. It is truly sobering to think that we are closer to AARP membership than to high school, but, as I try to live, it’s not how old you are, but how old you act…so I’m still 12.
Here are some pics that Kendall Demetrius Womack took…I’ll post more as folks send them to me.

A Time for Action, Not Outrage
Colbert King has it right. There will be plenty of time to assign blame later. What is needed right now is for people to focus their energy not on recriminations, but on helping those in need. Once we have the people of New Orleans and the surrounding region sheltered and fed, and the city restored to a point that people can return, then the blame game can begin. But not now.
HoustonHelps.org is going to act as a clearinghouse for people in Houston wanting to volunteer.
The Houston Chpater of the American Red Cross will hold 2-hour orientation classes for new volunteers Saturday at 10 and again at 1. You must go through orientation to volunteer with them and before taking any further disaster relief training, such as the Disaster Relief Institute being offered 9/9-11.
from Shelly Johnson: The Astrodome needs volunteers.
To participate as a [food-distributing] volunteer, you must be 12 years
of age or older and complete a Federally mandated training on food
handling. Training will take place this weekend in the Worship Center
of Second Baptist Church (at the corner of Woodway and Voss). Three
times/dates are available:
Saturday, September 3 at 9:00 a.m.
Sunday, September 4 at 2:00 p.m.
Monday, September 5 at 1:00 p.m.
More info when I get back from Beaumont.
Rep. Corbin sounds like he has a case of sour grapes gone to extreme.
HoustonChronicle.com – Legislator questions rejection of donation request:
State Rep. Corbin Van Arsdale questioned Tuesday whether an executive of Time Warner Cable had violated state bribery laws by rejecting the lawmaker’s request for a campaign contribution because of a vote he made on a specific telecommunications bill.
1) Rep. Corbin votes for SB21. 2) He then asks for money from a TW PAC. 3) They turn him down, saying b/c of his vote, they cannot support him “at this time.” 4) Rep. Corbin interprets this to mean that they will give him a donation if he were to change his vote on the reintroduced bill, and is therefore a bribe attempt.
