Today, I ordered a new satellite system from
Rapid Satellite after hemming and hawing and researching and procrastinating for the better part of this year. It should all get installed in about 10 days to 2 weeks. I’ll let you know more when it gets in.
And if you’d like to order from them as well, use Promo Code 4100…I signed up for their referral program (kinda like a legitimate kickback scheme 😉 ).

I got extremely fed up with Time/Warner cable about a year after I moved into my house, and signed up with Dish Network. Soon after, I upgraded to a DishPlayer, one of the first generation Personal Video Recorders. In simplistic terms, it acts like a VCR that records to a hard drive instead of to tape. The nice thing about it is that it recorded up to 20 hours of shows and let you pause live tv, do instant replay, and skip commericals (30-second fast forward) on recorded or paused shows. I loved it. However, it kept having weird software bugs (because the software was written by Microsoft, natch). My parents had DirecTV, and they liked my unit, so when they wanted something similar, we got them a DirectTV receiver with built-in TiVo. I *loved* the Season Pass feature of the TiVo, which automatically records a show no matter when or what channel it appears on. I started researching whether to upgrade my Dishplayer or jump ship to DirecTiVo. One thing that held me back initially was that D* (as it is called online) did not have BBC America, which I watched constantly on E* (as Dish is called), but then D* added it, and inertia alone stood in the way. My beast finally gave up the ghost this fall, but I was so busy with clients and gigs I had no time to act. After researching this decision for months, I finally gave up on and made the switch. I bought a system from Rapid Satellite (based out of Knoxville) today (December 30) and will let you know how it goes. If you order from them, use promo code 4100…they give me a kickback. 😉
